It’s going to be here before you know it – Christmas is just a few short weeks away. When I start to think about this coming non-stop season of the holidays…all the gifts I need to buy, gifts to make, menus to plan, food to cook, decorations to put up…I start to panic a little bit. As much as I try to keep things simple, I usually end up going overboard and things can get overwhelming around here. Shopping, baking, cleaning, wrapping – it all gets a little crazy.
The last time I went for a walk down to the lake, I listened to the waves were lapping up on the shore…whoosh…whoosh…whoosh.
Shopping…whoosh. Baking…whoosh. Wrapping…whoosh.
All the things we have to do through the holiday season, rhythmically and consistently beat on us in an attempt to wear us away like the shoreline. Whoosh. Whoosh. Whoosh.
But today? Today the lake is calm. Quiet. Frozen. Peaceful. The sun is out and the ice is sleek and glistening. It is still and beautiful. Nothing else has changed – my list to get ready for the holidays is still growing. But today I am reminded to stop. Be quiet. Have peace.
My hope for you, and for me, this Christmas season is that we are able to take a few moments each day to be still. A few moments of calm, quiet reflection. A few moments to appreciate the blessings we’ve been given and the people we love. Will you do that with me?
What are you grateful for today? Who are you grateful for today?
